 A Pintrait is a tactile piece of art created using thousands of pins arranged to form a portrait (or any other image!). Unlike traditional artwork, a Pintrait is designed to be felt as much as it is seen. It transforms visual imagery into a physical, touchable experience.

 Each pin in a Pintrait is strategically placed to represent density, shades and contours of the image. The result is a textured surface that forms a recognisable image when viewed and touched. The pins are all the same height and width, it is purely their exact placement that creates the image in the eye of the viewer.

The process starts with a photograph or image which is digitally converted into a density map. This map guides the exact placement of each pin and using precision engineering and handcraft the pins are inserted into a board.

The final piece is a stunning and interactive portrait made entirely from pins.

You can use almost any photo, but for the best results, the image should be high quality, well-lit, and clearly show the subject’s face (if it’s a portrait). Simple backgrounds and strong contrast help ensure the Pintrait captures important details in texture.

Creating a Pintrait typically takes 1 - 2 weeks, depending on how busy the studio is, the complexity of the image and the size of the piece.

This timeline includes photo processing, precision pin placement, quality checks, and final packaging. For larger orders, we’ll provide an estimated delivery date when you place your order.

In most cases we can offer an Express Service with a guaranteed delivery date for a fee of £100.

Yes! 

Before we begin creating your Pintrait you will receive a digital preview (rendering) which will show you exactly how your image will look as a Pintrait. 

At this stage, you can request changes, such as cropping, contrast adjustments, or background edits.

We’ll work with you to make sure the image looks just right before production begins but once you approve the preview, the piece goes into production and further changes are no longer possible.

We offer two standard sizes; Small (18" x 24") and Large (24" x 36").

Both sizes can be Portrait or Landscape orientated, depending on the original photo.

However we can create larger sizes too, these are quoted on a case-by-case basis and we will be happy to advise you free of charge and without obligation to buy.

 The pins are all 1” galvanized steel pins fired into the canvas under pressure. They do not rust or warp in extreme heat or humidity.

The canvas is a wooden backboard with integrated net mesh and in some cases hand-wrapped canvas.

Pintraits are surprisingly lightweight, especially considering their detailed construction 

• Small weighs approximately 3kg / 6.5lbs
• Large weighs approximately  5kg / 11lbs

Each Pintrait comes ready to hang, with mounting hardware already attached. You can use regular picture hooks or wall screws—just like you would with a framed print or canvas. We also include simple hanging instructions to make installation effortless.

 To clean your Pintrait, simply use a soft, dry cloth or a can of compressed air (or vac1uum) to remove any dust. Avoid water or cleaning sprays as moisture can damage the pins or board. With minimal care, your Pintrait will stay sharp and beautiful for years.
